Younger folks residing in foster care in our metropolis need assistance constructing a robust future the place they’re arrange for fulfillment. As an administration dedicated to uplifting all our metropolis’s youth, we’re right here to ensure these younger folks join to school and profession alternatives extra simply. That’s the reason, final week, we expanded a number of applications by way of the Administration for Kids’s Companies (ACS) that assist youngsters in foster care.

First, we’re increasing ‘Fair Futures,’ which offers one-on-one teaching and tutoring for our younger folks in foster care — ages 11 to 26 — serving to them plan for the long run and giving them a head begin in life. In Fiscal 12 months 2024, our coaches, working in partnership with New York Metropolis Public Colleges, helped a majority of ninth graders in foster care enroll in excessive faculties with above common commencement charges. Additionally they helped 116 excessive school-age youth who dropped out of highschool efficiently re-engage and re-enroll in a best-fit educational setting. And whereas the numbers are essential right here, they don’t inform the complete story: the story of these particular person lives which are modified once they get assist, steering, and the primary and second possibilities they should succeed.

Honest Futures started in 2019 and, due to the brave and efficient advocacy of youth in our care, was later expanded by our administration to incorporate younger folks concerned within the juvenile justice system. Over 4,000 younger individuals who have been in foster care or the juvenile justice system now have devoted coaches, a quantity that can develop to roughly 6,000 younger folks by Fiscal 12 months 2027 — a 50 % enhance.

Along with teaching, Honest Futures offers a spread of educational, profession improvement, housing, and impartial residing assist programs for younger folks in foster care or within the juvenile justice system. This can be a program that does extra than simply open doorways — it transforms lives.

We’re additionally increasing the ‘College Choice’ program, which we launched in 2022, and that gives youngsters in foster care with sturdy assist programs, together with monetary assist, as they head off to school. This system covers the schooling, room and board prices of a two-year or four-year school, along with offering younger folks with a each day stipend. This system is increasing from serving 400 younger folks to 500 youth, a 25 % enhance.

Constructing off the success of Faculty Alternative, we’re launching our new ‘Career Choice’ program that can join younger folks in foster care who’re in vocational, commerce, or workforce improvement applications with monetary and social assist as a result of school might not at all times be the suitable path for each younger individual. Total, the Profession Alternative program will serve roughly 400 youth.

These expansions and improvements are a part of a $163-million funding we introduced at this 12 months’s State of the Metropolis handle that can assist us attain 8,000 complete contributors throughout 5 widespread ACS applications — together with the three talked about above, in addition to GirlsJustUs and Assertive Group Engagement & Success — that serve youth in foster care and people concerned within the prison justice system. Collectively, these applications will assist join extra New York Metropolis youth with counseling, school alternatives, careers, and extra.

This can be a metropolis of alternative, and we’re dedicated to serving to younger New Yorkers fulfill their potential. We’re all invested within the success of our younger folks as a result of as I usually say, ‘if we don’t educate, we’ll incarcerate.’ And training doesn’t merely cease the day you graduate from highschool, as each younger individual wants some assist selecting the best path to take, whether or not that’s enrolling in school or studying a commerce.

Since we launched the Honest Futures and Faculty Alternative applications, extra younger folks in foster care have had the chance to complete highschool and attend school. By increasing these applications and including in assist for these attending vocational and commerce faculties, we’re proud to assist the subsequent technology of New Yorkers whereas making certain they’ve each alternative to afford to reside and thrive proper right here in our metropolis.
