Amid rising hypothesis that Mayor Eric Adams will not be working for re-election, he brushed apart questions on Tuesday about a few of his closest allies throwing their help behind former Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

“It’s politics; things happen in politics. One year, someone could say ‘he should step down as governor,’ next year, they’re standing up saying that ‘he should be mayor,’” Adams stated in an obvious reference to Cuomo, who resigned in 2021 amid a number of sexual misconduct allegations, which he denies.

“You can’t take this personally,” he added. “You gotta move with it, do what you do.”

Cuomo, the present frontrunner within the race, has drawn a gradual stream of endorsements from elected officers, unions, and political golf equipment since launching his marketing campaign on March 1. Amongst these backing his marketing campaign are US Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-Bronx), Teamsters Native 237, and the Staten Island Democratic Get together.

When requested by New York News Metro whom he hopes will nonetheless help his re-election bid, Adams stated the one backing he wants is from “the voters.”

“Endorsements don’t win races, knocking on doors do,” Adams stated. “The people matter…I’m gonna get out there and do what I do well. I’m a solid, solid campaigner. I know how to articulate a message that’s clear to crisp, and that’s what I’m going to do.”

But the mayor wouldn’t present any particulars on when he’ll start campaigning for re-election in earnest, simply over three months forward of the June 24 Democratic major.

Adams doesn’t at the moment have a marketing campaign supervisor or any seen group supporting his re-election. Moreover, his fundraising has lagged after he was denied greater than $4 million in public matching funds from the town Marketing campaign Finance Board in December.

The mayor has additionally declined to attend a litany of candidates’ boards frequented by most of his challengers, except for Cuomo.

Adams declared there is no such thing as a timetable by which he must be ramping up his marketing campaign, despite the fact that all candidates should collect and submit 3,750 petition signatures from registered voters by April 3 with a view to seem on the poll.

“I know what I’m doing,” Adams insisted Tuesday. “I’ve won before, and I’m going to put the chess in place, the chess game in place, and it’s not on anyone else’s timetable. It’s not because you want to see an indicator or someone else wants to see an indicator. No, I must put the strategy together just as I did the last time.”

Whereas Adams insists he’s nonetheless vying for re-election, his lack of a visual marketing campaign equipment has fueled hypothesis that he might not finally run, as a number of scandals have slowed down his mayoralty.

The mayor is reeling from the fallout of his federal indictment, the looks that he’s beholden to the Trump administration in alternate for dropping his costs, and a traditionally low job approval ranking. His administration suffered a significant blow with the resignation of 4 deputy mayors final month, most of whom he introduced replacements for final week.

Adams has confronted mounting calls to resign, and a current Quinnipiac College ballot discovered that 56% of New Yorkers suppose he ought to step down.
