NYC college students and academics’ union plan walkout to protest ICE raids throughout the nation

Mother and father and academics are reacting to college students’ deliberate walkout of NYC colleges on Friday to protest the nation’s ongoing ICE raids and stand in solidarity with the individuals of Minnesota. 

Get Free America is main the citywide pupil protest on Jan. 23. The self-described “youth-led movement” is encouraging each highschool and faculty college students to hitch the morning walkout, which is able to coincide with the same protest taking place in Minnesota. Organizers stated the walkout can be in protest of the deadly capturing of Renee Good by ICE brokers in Minneapolis on Jan. 7.

“We’re walking out of school to free NYC and free America from slave patrols 2.0, from Trump-Crow and from white supremacy,” a social media publish from the organizers states. “The MAGA regime is unleashing modern day slave patrols on our communities, terrorizing Black, brown and immigrant communities from Minneapolis and Memphis to LA and DC to Chicago and Charlotte. Now they are threatening to escalate attacks on New York City.”

Though many mother and father and academics respect the scholars’ considerations concerning the killing of Good and the continuing ICE raids, additionally they stated the scholars ought to stay at school that day. 

“Students should focus on learning,” Wealthy Candia, a retired NYC college trainer, instructed New York News. “And if they want to protest, it should be on their own personal time and not impede the school day.”

One other New Yorker, Patricia Borello Foggin, stated she “absolutely does not” help college students leaving class to protest.

“And the schools shouldn’t allow it,” she stated.

UFT organizes the walkout

In the meantime, the United Federation of Lecturers (UFT), NYC’s academics’ union, issued an emergency decision to show in solidarity with Minneapolis academics through the protest. 

“The UFT will call for an emergency demonstration and day of action here in New York, in solidarity with our fellow unionists and with students, faculty, staff, and immigrant communities in Minnesota on Friday, January 23rd,” the union stated.

New York News contacted the UFT for extra touch upon the walkout and is awaiting a response. 

It’s not clear proper now if any public college academics plan to take part within the walkout. Nevertheless,  Get Free held a minimum of one “training session” for college kids who need to take part within the occasion.

“We just held our first student walkout training! Students are organizing. Learning their rights and preparing to walk out this Friday,” the organizers wrote in a publish.

It’s unclear if the protest coaching was held throughout college hours. 

Though Jan. 23 is a faculty day, many college students will probably be busy taking the Regents exams, that are being administered this week.

Defending Freedom of Speech

In the meantime, many mother and father in New York Metropolis, upon listening to concerning the walkout, stated they may ensure their youngsters stay at school that day. 

“My child is there to learn, not participate in protests, peaceful or otherwise,” Daybreak Marie, a mom from Staten Island, stated. “I have no issues with standing up for your beliefs, and my children are taught to do so; however, do it on your own time, not time designated for education.”

Zhena Revich, of the Higher West Aspect, echoed the same sentiment.

“Schools are for unbiased education, and the safety of the students is their only job. They want to March they can do that outside of school and work hours,” she stated.
