A 12-year-old woman has been charged in reference to a reported assault on Muslim college students in Waterbury, Connecticut, metropolis officers mentioned.

The mother and father of two 13-year-old ladies say the kids have been attacked at Wallace Center Faculty earlier this month.

The Seventh-grade twins have been injured after being overwhelmed by fellow college students and having their hijabs ripped off earlier this month, based on the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR).

Officers are investigating claims the ladies may need been focused due to their faith.

Police beforehand mentioned a 12-year-old began the battle and he or she was referred to a youth diversionary program.

In a press release launched Friday, Waterbury officers mentioned one other 12-year-old woman is now going through fees for intimidation based mostly on bigotry and bias.

“Investigators determined that the altercation was motivated by religion and/or ethnicity, meeting the legal definition of a hate crime,” officers mentioned in a press release.

“The students who instigated the incident will be properly disciplined by the school district and face appropriate consequences in the judicial system,” Mayor Paul Pernerewski mentioned.

Officers mentioned the Metropolis of Waterbury Division of Schooling has verified that bullying occurred, taken disciplinary motion and carried out enhanced college security measures in response to the incident.

“While this was not part of a widespread problem, this is an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to ensure our students are safe and respectful of one another,” Interim Superintendent Dr. Darren Schwartz mentioned.

The investigation is ongoing.
