Unhealthy Bunny followers prepared for Puerto Rico residency as Yale provides course on the artist

Unhealthy Bunny has reached worldwide stardom, however this summer season he’s targeted on his house of Puerto Rico. 

“This album means so much and it means so much to all of us, every Puerto Rican, whether we are on the island or whether in the diaspora,” stated Adriana Waterson, of Norwalk. 

Friday, Unhealthy Bunny kicks off a run of 30 exhibits on the iconic Coliseo de Puerto Rico. The residency is titled “No Me Quiero Ir de Aqui,” which interprets to I don’t wish to go away right here. 

“What does it mean for him to turn the spotlight on Puerto Rico with 30 concerts? It’s an invitation to engage not only with the music of Puerto Rico, but Puerto Rico’s history through the music and the political challenge that Puerto Ricans are facing on challenges across the board really, economically, in relation to migration,” stated Yale affiliate professor of American Research and Ethnicity, Race & Migration Albert Laguna. 

This fall, Professor Laguna will train a brand new course titled Unhealthy Bunny: Musical Aesthetics and Politics. It would discover Unhealthy Bunny’s album “DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS” and the way songs spotlight political points, historical past, and the evolution of music.

“Directly in the lyrics, for example like songs “Lo Que Le Pasó a Hawaii,” talking about Puerto Rico’s colonial status, many Puerto Ricans had to leave the island because of the difficult economic challenges, the challenges posed by hurricanes and the responses,” he added. 

Laguna stated Unhealthy Bunny’s newest album has captivated followers of all ages due to the big selection of musical beats within the observe, together with reggaeton, salsa, and bomba y plena.

It’s one thing that attracted Adriana Waterson. 

“It is something completely different. This – it just speaks to my soul, to my core. I’m going to cry just thinking about it. It gives me goosebumps,” Waterson stated. 

Waterson stated the lyrics carry her proper again to La Isla Del Encanto, the place she was born and raised. She is thrilled to journey in August to see Unhealthy Bunny take the stage. 

“I thought you were going to ask me what my favorite song is and I can’t even tell you, I can tell why I love every song for different reasons but it’s just this visceral, this patriotism that I feel, this love for my country, for my island, for my people, memories, my hope for the future,” Waterson stated.
