Meeting Member Jenifer Rajkumar obtained the endorsement of the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Affiliation.

Meeting Member Jenifer Rajkumar secured a serious endorsement in her bid for New York Metropolis public advocate on Thursday, Might 29, receiving the backing of the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Affiliation (PBA), town’s largest police union.

The PBA, which represents greater than 20,000 uniformed NYPD officers, cited Rajkumar’s public security file and assist for law enforcement officials as key causes for its assist. Rajkumar is campaigning to unseat incumbent Public Advocate Jumaane Williams within the upcoming June 24 Democratic main.

“Assemblywoman Rajkumar understands the importance of standing up for public safety and for the hardworking men and women who protect our city,” mentioned PBA President Patrick Hendry. “She knows that the Public Advocate’s job is not to demonize cops or dream up ways to make our job harder. Jenifer has been fighting in Albany to ensure police officers are treated fairly and to give us the tools and support we need to protect our communities.”

Rajkumar, a Stanford Regulation graduate and former civil rights legal professional, is the primary South Asian lady elected to the New York State Legislature. She has represented Meeting District 38, which incorporates elements of Queens, since 2021. Within the Meeting, she has sponsored a number of public security measures, together with the SMOKEOUT Act, geared toward curbing unlawful hashish retailers and laws increasing protections for home violence survivors.

“I am honored to have the support of the brave officers who keep our neighborhoods safe,” Rajkumar mentioned. “As Public Advocate, I will continue to fight for a city where working people can live in safety, dignity, and fairness. I will transform the Public Advocate’s Office from a sleepy political stepping stone into a real force for working people and help build a safer, more affordable city for all.”

The Workplace of the Public Advocate is a citywide elected place that serves as an ombudsman between residents and metropolis authorities, with the facility to introduce laws, examine complaints and monitor metropolis businesses. Rajkumar has pledged to develop the workplace’s authorized capabilities and improve oversight of each metropolis operations and company actors, in distinction to what she described as underutilization of the workplace beneath its present management.

Rajkumar enters the race with a broad coalition of endorsements, together with assist from labor unions, tenant organizations and immigrant rights teams. Amongst her different endorsers are Senators Joe Addabbo and Toby Ann Stavisky, a number of metropolis and state lawmakers, native Democratic golf equipment and different political leaders throughout town.
