For highschool senior Ruthann Watson, making promenade queen was the cherry on prime of an already excellent night time.
The Far Rockaway teen has been via lots the final couple years, so the NYPD determined to make her promenade desires come true — with a full police escort and even a trip in a brand new Audi R8.
“I wasn’t going to come to prom, until these officers helped me. So honestly thank you so much,” stated Watson.
“She hasn’t stopped smiling yet. Makes us smile. We did shed a few tears, I won’t lie we’re in awe,” stated NYPD Youth Officer Brittany Brown.
It was solely 2 years in the past that tragedy struck Ruthann’s household: A cousin killed her older sister, her younger niece and nephew, and her brother in-law. Ruthann is the one who known as 911.
She’s fought to beat that trauma, and ended up forming a long-lasting relationship with the NYPD.
“I asked her, ‘What are you doing for prom?’ And she said ‘Oh I’m gonna sit this one out because, you know, I can’t afford it.’ And I called her immediately and I was like ‘Yo, we’re gonna have to help her,'” stated NYPD Youth Officer Tequalynn Vessel.
The officers’ captain stated they completely had his full assist.
“A lot of people know my story and it’s sad and whatnot. I feel like it’s one thing to say something about it, like I wish you the best. It’s one thing to actually act on it, so I’m actually so grateful,” Watson stated.
The youth officers made certain she had the proper costume and sneakers, her hair and nails carried out by professionals. To ensure she is aware of that what occurred to her doesn’t outline her.
“Not for her to forget but just to show her that people around her support her, they love her still, after everything that happened,” stated Officer Vessel.
“I feel so special. And honestly I’m so grateful, I couldn’t have asked for anything better,” Watson stated.
