There is a handful of latest four-legged officers able to hit the streets and serve their communities.
Seven K9 officers made up Patrol Class 128 that graduated on Friday, Jan. 4 from a grueling 14-week coaching course and are becoming a member of police departments in Philadelphia, Radnor and Higher Darby, Pennsylvania, in addition to Franklin Township, New Jersey.
Amongst them, is K9 Rex and his handler Officer Ernesto Vargas who says the coaching program bonded the pair.
“He’s three-years-old and a Belgian Malinois. He’s a narcotics canine: He’s skilled in narcotics,” Officer Vargas told NBC10. “They educate you bond along with your animal and do the little correction it’s essential to do to make them what he’s alleged to do.”
The connection grew right into a trusted one because the K9s and their handlers went via numerous hours of workout routines that included obedience, agility, monitoring, looking and apprehension methods.
“You’re taking canine hits, you’re working agility programs with them,” Vargas explained. “It is bodily, very bodily.”
