Hostos Neighborhood School pupil Marco Álvarez has earned first place within the Jap Sociological Society (ESS) Undergraduate Poster Session, held in Boston from March 6-9.
Álvarez’s poster, titled “Shattered Bonds: A Historical and Sociological Analysis of Child Welfare in the United States,” was acknowledged for greatest reflecting ESS’s mission of selling efficient sociology schooling and making use of social science instruments to deal with societal challenges. His analysis examines systemic inequalities within the baby welfare system, tracing their historic roots and analyzing their present-day influence on marginalized communities.

Álvarez was inspired to use for ESS’s Undergraduate Poster Session after presenting his honors analysis undertaking to Hostos Neighborhood School Affiliate Professor of Sociology Sarah Hoiland and the sociology class in the course of the Fall 2024 semester. Along with incomes accolades on the ESS convention, Álvarez will showcase his undertaking on the Hostos Pupil Analysis Symposium, scheduled for Monday, April 28.
“The entire experience was inspiring, eye-opening and truly validating. When I first began my honors project last semester, I never imagined it would take me this far,” Álvarez mentioned. “Presenting at the conference and engaging with others about my research was already an incredible opportunity, but winning my session was something I never expected. Beyond the recognition, this experience has given me a newfound confidence in my ability to critically analyze and articulate complex ideas.”
Álvarez is a Behavioral Sciences pupil in Interdisciplinary Liberal Arts at Hostos Neighborhood School.

Álvarez was not the one Hostos consultant on the ESS convention. Hoiland’s new e book, “Righteous Sisterhood: Politics and Power in an All-Women’s Motorcycle Club,” was featured at an Creator-Meets-Critic panel. Hostos alumna Rocío Rayo chaired the panel, providing a complete overview and insightful evaluation of Hoiland’s e book. Rayo framed the e book for the viewers whereas posing thought-provoking questions.
One other Hostos alumna, Atreya Vaughn, was additionally a part of the panel. Presently a senior at John Jay School, Vaughn graduated from Hostos in 2023 and was the one undergraduate panelist.
