The Democratic major in New York’s eleventh Congressional district is heating up, even after the U.S. Supreme Court docket delivered a victory for Republican incumbent Nicole Malliotakis.

Former police officer and political staffer Michael DeCillis jumped into the race on Monday, condemning Malliotakis and her celebration.

“I’m running because President Trump and Congressional Republicans including Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis are destroying democracy at home, and diplomacy and security abroad,” he stated in a press release. “We’re all struggling to pay bills while inflation and tariffs eat into our already thin family budgets. Families are finding it nearly impossible to afford healthcare, groceries, our kids’ education, and their homes, while Trump and his friends made literal billions through tax cuts and grift.”

A fourth-generation Staten Islander who now lives in Bay Ridge, DeCillis spent ten years with the NYPD, served as a paramedic on 9/11, and spent a number of years as a particular training trainer in New York Metropolis public faculties.

Extra lately, DeCillis labored as a political advisor and Chief of Employees for then-Meeting member Mathylde Frontus earlier than taking over a gig as assistant counsel for the NYC Districting Fee. He has mounted two congressional campaigns in NY-11 earlier than, however ended each earlier than Election Day.

DeCillis slammed Trump’s administration and the actions of all congressional Republicans, and condemned Malliotakis for supporting the president’s nationwide ICE crackdown and his navy marketing campaign on Iran.

“Malliotakis has supported every inhumane, cruel, and unconstitutional policy that Trump has implemented,” he stated.

The candidate stated Malliotakis and her colleagues within the Republican-majority Home “have been absent for the past year,” and had did not act “as a co-equal branch of government.”

“House Republicans ended 2025 as the least productive Congress in modern history – while we all live with the fear and anxiety of not knowing if we’ll even have democratic elections this fall,” he stated. “Enough of this insanity, I’m here to get to work restoring and strengthening democracy, and to bring focus and actual solutions to the residents of NY-11.”

DeCillis will face off in opposition to longtime trainer Troy McGhie — who declared his candidacy final summer time — within the June Democratic major. With the Republican race to date uncontested, the winner of the Democratic major will go on to battle Malliotakis within the November basic election.

Democrats put up a struggle in NY-11.

Democrats are hoping to win the Home majority with the 2026 midterms, and solely have to flip a number of Republican-held seats to take action. For some time, it appeared that the celebration had some hope in NY-11.

Final month, a Manhattan Supreme Court docket choose dominated that the prevailing traces of NY-11 — which incorporates all of Staten Island and a part of southern Brooklyn — unlawfully diluted the voting energy of Black and Latino residents, and ordered a brand new map to be drawn earlier than the midterms.

Democrats pushed for a brand new map that might mix Staten Island with decrease Manhattan, fairly than southern Brooklyn, bringing extra progressive voters into the district and opening the door for a Democrat to flip the district.

Malliotakis, who probably would have misplaced her seat in a redrawn district, appealed the choice and sought an emergency keep from the U.S. Supreme Court docket. On Monday, the courtroom dominated that the outdated map have to be used whereas the appeals course of is underway, that means it is going to be in place for the 2026 midterms.

Although NY-11 has traditionally been pretty conservative, Democrat Max Rose ousted a Republican incumbent in 2018, however served only a single time period earlier than he was unseated by Malliotakis. Rose tried to retake the seat in 2022, however once more misplaced to Malliotakis.

Southern Brooklyn has turn out to be more and more conservative in recent times. In 2022, a number of longtime Democratic Meeting Members — together with DeCillis’ former boss, Frontus — had been unseated by Republicans in a neighborhood “Red Wave.” In 2024, Republican Steve Chan defeated Democratic incumbent Iwen Chu in state Senate District 17, the place she had eked out a slim victory simply two years earlier.
