Demonstrators at Columbia College persevering with to protest ICE’s detention of Mahmoud Khalil briefly chained themselves to a campus gate on Wednesday afternoon. 

Eight protesters used bike locks to shackle themselves to the wrought-iron gates of St. Paul’s Chapel at 1160 Amsterdam Ave. at round 1 p.m. on April 2. The protesters recognized themselves as Jewish college students who’re fuming over the detention of Khalil, a fellow pupil who was detained by ICE final month.

Regardless of Khalil’s authorized residency, the White Home has been endeavoring to have Khalil — whose spouse is eight months pregnant — deported, which his authorized staff says is a violation of his First Modification and civil rights. Now protesters say they need to know who inside the school gave up his title to ICE.

“Which one of them turned over student names to ICE? That was our only demand of them,” one of many chained college students mentioned. “We are staying here until we comply with their demand.”

Simply over an hour after they locked themselves in, scores of NYPD officers and members of the college’s public security workplace blocked off the sidewalk. They started utilizing bolt cutters to chop them free earlier than eradicating them from the grounds.
