Each events had been gunning for the seat, which was vacated by conservative Democrat Simcha Felder in March after he gained a particular election for the forty fourth Council District.

President Donald Trump gained SD22 by 71% in 2020, and took it by 77% in November. In 2022, a “Red Wave” unseated three Democratic Meeting Members within the space, and Republicans flipped close by SD17 by greater than 5,000 votes final fall.

Although Felder was a Democrat, he often caucused along with his Republican counterparts and sometimes ran on a number of get together traces. Within the 2024 election, he appeared on the poll as a Democrat, Republican, and Conservative — and earned the very best variety of votes on the Republican get together line.

However SD22 voters have largely continued to assist Democrats in state Meeting and Metropolis Council races, and continued the pattern in electing Sutton. Turnout was low — solely about 8% of the district’s greater than 147,000 energetic registered voters participated within the election.

A co-founder of the Sephardic Group Federation who has served on the boards on the New York Most cancers Heart and the Secure Basis, Sutton was backed by the Brooklyn Democratic Social gathering and campaigned on three “key initiatives:” schooling reform, financial progress, and environmental protections.

“Sam Sutton has been a fixture in our community,” stated Brooklyn Democratic Social gathering Chair Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn, in an announcement. “His senatorial nomination was unanimous—and for good reason. Sam is a consensus-builder, a champion for equity, and an ardent leader who brings both dedication and competence to the table.”

On Might 20, a social media account tied to Caller’s marketing campaign stated he had referred to as Sutton to congratulate him on the win.

“This victory represents a unified voice calling for positive change across our diverse district — and I am eager to get to work ensuring our constituencies’ pressing issues are solved,” Sutton stated in an announcement. “From tackling antisemitism to expanding economic development to improving public safety, I’m looking forward to working with my future colleagues in the Senate to advocate for Brooklynites and all New Yorkers.”

Ken Martin, co-chair of the Democratic Nationwide Committee, stated Sutton’s victory confirmed that voters have been “ready to reject” candidates who embrace Trump’s insurance policies.

‘[Tuesday’s] victory, in a district Donald Trump gained by 55 factors in November, is yet one more proof level Republicans are sinking,” he stated in an announcement. “While Trump and Republicans side with billionaires, voters are siding with strong Democratic leaders who will fight for everyday Americans, protect their rights, and uphold their freedoms.”
