Third graders from the Police Athletic League’s (PAL) Webster Heart within the Bronx explored the method of harvesting and extracting honey from beehives on Tuesday, Nov. 26, from the roof of the middle, positioned at 2255 Webster Ave.

A beekeeper guided the youngsters in uncapping honeycomb cells and utilizing a centrifugal extractor to spin the honeycombs, filtering the uncooked honey. The honey was then jarred and labeled, giving the children the chance to take house their harvest and share it with their households.

This train provided the youngsters a fascinating behind-the-scenes glimpse into the artisanal honey extraction course of, whereas additionally introducing them to the distinct traits of city honey. Beekeepers demonstrated the method utilizing a modular instance from the beehives, creating an interactive and academic expertise the place the children actively participated and loved the candy rewards of their efforts.

“It is amazing to see our participants open to new experiences and learn the magic of bees,” Meredith Grey, PAL’s Director of Program Improvement and Partnership, stated. “This exposure to nature and sustainability will encourage future agricultural leaders.”

PAL’s city beehives function a novel sanctuary for honeybees, providing them a secure haven whereas bringing nature nearer to Bronx kids collaborating within the PAL program. These beehives are a part of an progressive sustainability initiative in partnership with Alvéole, a social enterprise devoted to nature-based options. Alvéole introduces honeybee hives, pollinator habitats, and bee-friendly gardens to city buildings to advertise greener cities.

Along with supporting sustainability, this workshop and different after-school packages at PAL assist kids construct confidence via hands-on studying experiences.
