Tons of took to the Brooklyn Bridge on March 9 to commemorate the sixtieth Anniversary of “Bloody Sunday,” the historic but violent civil rights march throughout an Alabama bridge, together with those that initially made the stroll all these years in the past.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. led a whole bunch in marching throughout the Edmund Pettis Bridge in Selma, AL on March 7, 1965 to protest the remedy of Black Individuals and demand their proper to vote. After crossing the span, they have been met with state troopers who brutally beat them with batons and tear gasoline — the photographs of which led to a nationwide outcry. 

Effectively over half a century later, a few of those that walked that path and witnessed the bloodshed rallied outdoors of New York Metropolis Corridor on Sunday — together with Harriet Michel, who held up {a photograph} taken of her tending to a person left bloodied within the assault.

Former Manhattan Borough President C. Virginia Fields says she has seen the method of the Civil Rights motion, marched in it as a youngster with Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and spent six days in jail, however fears that the progress is being misplaced throughout the Trump administration.

“Voting Rights Act, civil rights, education, employment, all of the gains are under attack, and we cannot allow those people to push us back,” Fields mentioned. “There’s mad men, Trump and Musk. Republicans are sitting there knowing it was wrong. It’s up to us just as we did in 1965.”

Organized by civil rights legal professional Norman Siegel and Michel, the contributors seemed to respect the previous and struggle for the longer term by main a march over the Brooklyn Bridge.

Kids carried indicators quoting John Lewis studying “Good trouble” whereas one senior lugged an indication declaring “back to the bridges.” These marching mentioned they refuse to return to a time of extra discrimination and hatred in America.

“For some Americans, the mantra Make America Great Again means going back, going back to a period when black folks had to sit in the back of the bus, women were relegated to the kitchen, and LGBTQ+ members to the closet,” Siegel mentioned.
