New York Lawyer Normal Letitia James introduced that the Workplace of the Lawyer Normal (OAG) has expanded its staff to incorporate a first-ever Director of Muslim Affairs.

Lengthy Island resident Mohammad Awais formally began the position on Dec. 6, 2024. On this place, Awais will work with Muslim communities throughout New York, handle their wants, and join them with OAG’s varied assets on civil rights, housing, staff’ rights, client safety, and extra.

“New York is home to one of the largest Muslim communities in the country, and I am proud to welcome the Office of the Attorney General’s first-ever Director of Muslim Affairs to work with Muslim communities across the state,” mentioned AG James. “From Buffalo to Brooklyn, Muslim communities across the state have grown over the years and contribute meaningfully to our neighborhoods, as they have done for generations. This new role will help my office ensure that Muslim New Yorkers’ voices are heard, their needs are met, and their rights are protected.”

The brand new position, created by James, comes at a time when Islamophobia and anti-Arab hate is on the rise. This place is a part of the OAG’s Intergovernmental Affairs staff, which focuses on connecting with New York’s numerous communities, together with Latino, Jewish, Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI), and LGBTQ+ communities.

The position will broaden upon the Lawyer Normal’s current work with Muslim communities; James has held and attended city halls, iftars, and different group occasions for New York’s Muslim communities.
