Mayor Adams declares $80 million in medical debt forgiveness for low earnings New Yorkers via historic debt aid program.

Mayor Eric Adams introduced in the present day that 35,000 New Yorkers can be relieved of $80 million in medical debt, marking the primary spherical of a plan to offer intensive debt aid.

This effort, the biggest municipal medical debt aid program within the nation, will in the end goal to help as much as 500,000 New Yorkers over the following three years.

Adams first introduced this new debt program in 2024, stating the administration is seeking to forgive $2 billion all through the following three years.

“With this debt relief program, our administration is following through on its promise to relieve $2 billion in medical debt, starting with putting $80 million back in the pockets of working-class New Yorkers this week alone. Our administration is committed to making New York City more affordable and the best place to raise a family,” he stated. 

The Mayor’s initiative is in partnership with Undue Medical Debt, a nationwide nonprofit group primarily based in New York Metropolis that makes a speciality of buying and forgiving medical debt.

To be certified for this system, contributors have to be at or beneath 400 p.c of the Federal Poverty Line, or be carrying medical debt equal to five p.c or extra of annual family earnings.
