Throughout a Dec. 14 assembly of native Conservative Celebration candidates, public advocate contender Angela Aquino criticized incumbent Jumaane Williams, claiming he was disconnected from the experiences of most Black People and even questioned his racial id.

“Currently, we have an incumbent that presents himself as a Black person. But is he really Black?” mentioned Aquino in a speech earlier than about two dozen attendees within the Bronx. She defined that in her view, Williams has not acquired actual punishment for his a number of civil disobedience arrests, together with a 2018 incident wherein he was arrested throughout a protest and convicted of blocking an ambulance.

“The most that happened to him was suffer[ing] a stop and frisk. And he cried like a big baby when we know that the real Black person really gets arrested and gets convicted. That’s Black.”

Aquino questioned why Williams “has the nerve to say he can relate to the Black and brown community who has barely nothing to eat?” The Bronx Occasions reached out to Williams’ workplace and is awaiting a response.

Aquino described herself in her speech as a group activist and has over 25,000 followers on Instagram. 

After the speeches ended, Aquino confirmed to the Bronx Occasions that she stood by her feedback about Williams, together with questioning his race. “I’m not backing down on that,” she mentioned. 

Aquino mentioned Williams is “so disconnected to what’s really going on in the community,” as evidenced by his advocacy for congestion pricing and assist of asylum seekers. “I didn’t see him do that [level of support] for Black people, frankly,” she mentioned.

Aquino, who described her personal race as Asian-American, mentioned that her expertise as a single mom who has skilled home violence, in addition to advocacy work with incarcerated individuals, has put her nearer than Williams to the truth of Black individuals’s lived expertise. 

In comparison with his arrest for blocking an ambulance throughout a protest, “Black people receive so much more pain and injustice than that,” she mentioned. 

Williams, a former metropolis council member and gubernatorial candidate, has held the general public advocate function since 2019 and is working for re-election in 2025. Aquino mentioned in her speech that Williams has executed little to fight antisemitism happening throughout pro-Palestinian protests and that Democrats’ insurance policies generally have precipitated undue struggling for single moms like her. “I’m here because I know that the city deserves a champion, and it’s not him.”
