DOJ says Trenton police violate civil rights, interact in unconstitutional conduct

In a report launched Thursday, Nov. 21, 2024, officers with the Federal Division of Justice have discovered that the Trenton Police Division and the Metropolis of Trenton, New Jersey “engage in a pattern or practice of conduct that violates the Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.”

Additionally, in an announcement launched Thursday, Trenton Mayor W. Reed Gusciora stated that he labored to make sure that town’s authorities cooperated with the U.S. Division of Justice and that he plans to proceed that cooperative effort to implement suggestions made within the report.

“All residents of the City of Trenton, and the thousands of people who come here to work and visit on a daily basis, want and deserve a police department which keeps them safe while upholding the rights afforded by the U.S. Constitution,” Gusciora stated in an announcement. “Even prior to the USDOJ review, the City and the [Trenton Police Department] had already begun to change policies and practices that prioritize community safety, accountability, and respect for civil liberties. One of the most important changes is the formation of the Internal Affairs Bureau which consists of the internal affairs, professional standards, human resources, and training units. The City will continue to work cooperatively with the USDOJ, our state partners at the Department of Law and Public Safety and the Department of Community Affairs, local community organizations, and residents to implement the recommendations highlighted in the Report as quickly as possible.”
