Gov. Kathy Hochul secured the backing of the New York State Laborers Union on Wednesday night, including a serious construction-trades endorsement to her re-election marketing campaign.
Members of the Laborers’ Worldwide Union of North America, or LIUNA, formally endorsed Hochul throughout a month-to-month union assembly at St. Vartan Armenian Apostolic Cathedral in Murray Hill, the place the governor appeared earlier than members after the vote.
The endorsement offers Hochul and her operating mate, former Metropolis Council Speaker Adrienne Adams, help from a 40,000-member development union whose members construct and restore roads, bridges, airports, faculties, tunnels, subway strains and different main infrastructure throughout the state.
Hochul used the looks to tie her marketing campaign to the state’s infrastructure agenda, pointing to initiatives together with the JFK Airport redevelopment, the Gateway Tunnel, the Second Avenue Subway and offshore wind developments — large-scale efforts that rely closely on union labor.
“I couldn’t be more proud to accept the endorsement of New York’s Laborers’ Union,” Hochul stated. “I personally know the power of a union card to change the lives of millions — just like it did for my own.”
Union leaders stated Hochul earned their help via her document on wages, advantages, coaching, employee security and infrastructure spending.
“Kathy Hochul has been a steadfast champion of New York’s working people and has earned LIUNA’s support,” stated Mike Helstrom, LIUNA vice chairman and Jap regional supervisor. “From safety standards to infrastructure investment, project labor agreements to prevailing wages, Governor Hochul has stepped up to ensure working men and women aren’t left behind but rather made a priority.”
The Laborers’ endorsement provides to a rising roster of labor help for Hochul, who has already drawn backing from CSEA, DC 37, IUOE Native 825 and the Resort and Gaming Trades Council. However Hochul’s labor document has not gone unchallenged. The Transport Employees Union declined to again her earlier this yr, accusing her of siding in opposition to transit staff in disputes over staffing, pensions and MTA prices.
David Bolger, enterprise supervisor of LIUNA’s Mason Tenders District Council of Larger New York and Lengthy Island, stated the union would work to rally members and communities behind Hochul’s marketing campaign.
“Now more than ever, it’s important that working people support candidates with an established record and continued commitment to standing up for organized labor,” Bolger stated.
Anthony Vita, enterprise supervisor of LIUNA Native 79, stated Hochul had been a robust advocate for union requirements and coaching in New York Metropolis’s development trade.
“Local 79 is proud to support Governor Hochul for re-election, because we know she takes the needs of New York’s working people seriously,” Vita stated.
Hochul won’t face a major problem subsequent month; she is ready to face off in opposition to Republican gubernatorial candidate and Nassau County Govt Bruce Blakeman in November.
