NYC Democratic Rep. Jerry Nadler says he will not run for reelection in 2026

Democratic Rep. Jerry Nadler of New York says he is not going to run for reelection subsequent 12 months, in accordance with an interview revealed Monday night time by The New York Instances.

Nadler advised the Instances that watching then-President Joe Biden’s truncated reelection marketing campaign final 12 months “actually mentioned one thing concerning the necessity for generational change within the social gathering, and I believe I wish to respect that.” He advised a youthful Democratic lawmaker in his seat “can maybe do better, can maybe help us more.”

Nadler, 78, is serving his seventeenth time period in Congress. He was chairman of the Home Judiciary Committee from 2019 to 2023, then served as rating member on the panel after Republicans gained Home management. He stepped down from that position late final 12 months.

Nadler’s resolution to relinquish that spot got here a day after fellow Democratic Rep. Jamie Raskin introduced his bid for the job and shortly amassed help from colleagues.

“I am also proud that, under my leadership, some of our caucus’s most talented rising stars have been given a platform to demonstrate their leadership and their abilities,” Nadler wrote then in a letter to Democrats that was obtained by The Related Press.

With out naming names, Nadler advised to the Instances that a few of his Democratic colleagues also needs to think about retirement.

“I’m not saying we should change over the entire party,” Nadler mentioned within the interview posted Monday. “But I think a certain amount of change is very helpful, especially when we face the challenge of (President Donald) Trump and his incipient fascism.”
