New York Metropolis commuters will quickly have an opportunity to check out a brand new technique of transportation.

Waymo acquired its first allow from the New York Division of Transportation to start testing its autonomous vehicles in New York Metropolis, Mayor Eric Adams introduced on Friday.

Waymo, Alphabet’s autonomous automobile subsidiary, will start testing with eight vehicles in Manhattan and downtown Brooklyn. The preliminary testing will undergo late September with the potential for Waymo to increase its pilot testing interval.

New York state regulation requires a skilled autonomous automobile specialist to take a seat behind the wheel always throughout operation.

“We’re a tech-friendly administration and we’re always looking for innovative ways to safely move our city forward,” Adams mentioned in a launch. “New York City is proud to welcome Waymo to test this new technology in Manhattan and Brooklyn, as we know this testing is only the first step in moving our city further into the 21st century. As we continue to implement responsible innovation, we will always prioritize street safety.”

Waymo is required to coordinate with the New York Division of Transportation via common conferences and knowledge reporting. The corporate should additionally certify that it’s adhering to cybersecurity practices.

The Division of Transportation emphasised that its Waymo approval strictly pertains to testing autonomous automobile expertise. New York Metropolis Taxi and Limousine Fee (TLC) guidelines prohibit the usage of autonomous autos for for-hire service, and any firm offering for-hire service should acquire a TLC license.
