The looming SEPTA cuts may additionally affect Amtrak service between Philadelphia, Harrisburg and Pittsburgh in addition to the Northeast Hall between Boston and Washington, D.C., officers revealed.

In a press release to NBC10 on Tuesday, a spokesperson mentioned that SEPTA’s service cuts would affect Amtrak’s means to reinvest in its rail community, probably resulting in points throughout the system.

“While failure to adequately fund SEPTA’s operation would directly impact SEPTA-operated commuter trains that run along Amtrak infrastructure, the potential reduction in SEPTA’s financial contribution will have a negative impact on Amtrak’s ability to reinvest in the rail network,” Amtrak mentioned in a press release. “This could lead to a deterioration in infrastructure condition and authorized train operating speeds, negatively impacting Amtrak-operated, PennDOT-sponsored Keystone Service and Pennsylvanian service between Philadelphia, Harrisburg, and Pittsburgh, as well as Northeast Corridor services.”

The precise affect the approaching — seemingly unavoidable at this level — SEPTA cuts may have on Amtrak’s system hasn’t been detailed by officers.

However, on Monday, Aug. 18, Pennsylvania Rep. Brendan Boyle (D-2nd dist.) claimed the funding cuts may result in the top of the Keystone Service altogether.

In line with Boyle, on an annual foundation, SEPTA contributes $71.1 million to Amtrak with a view to function on traces within the Philadelphia space.

If essentially the most drastic cuts go into impact on January 2026, 5 regional rail traces could be eradicated. Together with that, Boyle mentioned, Amtrak would shutter its Keystone Service Line.

“If SEPTA cuts or eliminates that funding to Amtrak, that rail line will cease to operate,” Boyle mentioned Monday.

That line repeatedly takes commuters between Philly and Harrisburg and New York Metropolis and locations in between.

At a press occasion on Tuesday, Gov. Josh Shapiro pushed again on Boyle’s feedback, asserting that the Keystone Service Line would not be completely lower, however may see modifications resulting from SEPTA cuts.

“If SEPTA is unable to make the payments that they need to make to Amtrak, what it could potentially do is slow down the maintenance that is needed along those lines, which could cause slowdowns along those routes or having more of those routes have to get stopped because of a maintenance issue,” Shapiro mentioned. “But, the lines aren’t going to be cancelled. They are going to be compromised if we don’t get this funding in place.”

Whereas Amtrak officers did not say the road could possibly be shuttered utterly, the mass transit service supplier did word that companies could be negatively impacted on that line in addition to on the Pennsylvanian line — which travels between New York Metropolis, Philadelphia, Harrisburg and Pittsburgh.

Providers is also impacted throughout Amtrak’s Northeast Hall companies, which embody journey all throughout the east coast from Boston to Washington D.C.

Amtrak officers did not element simply how these impacts may impact companies. However, in a press release, the practice service known as SEPTA “good partners” that present a “critical commuter service.”

“We hope there is a path forward so SEPTA can continue providing vital transportation service and partnerships to the region,” Amtrak mentioned in a press release.
