Council member Tiffany Caban was amongst 50 individuals arrested on Friday afternoon as demonstrators stormed the foyer of Senator Chuck Schumer‘s of Midtown’s workplace.

Council member Tiffany Cabán was amongst 50 individuals arrested on Friday afternoon as demonstrators stormed the foyer of Senator Chuck Schumer‘s of Midtown’s workplace.

About 200 protesters from Jewish Voices for Peace rushed into the foyer of 780 third Avenue at simply after midday on August 1, which serves as an entry level to each Senator Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand’s places of work. The group sat within the foyer, unfurled banners studying “let Gaza live” and “let aid in now,” all of the whereas they banged pots and bans. Some even appeared to weep as they sang “stop staving Gaza” and “let it end.”

A number of elected officers joined the act of civil disobedience, together with Councilmember Tiffany Cabán and Meeting member Claire Valdez.

When New York News requested why Cabán was taking part within the protest, she had this to say: “Because stop starving Gaza. The U.S is playing for the starvation and bombing of Gaza.”

The sit-in got here shortly after 75% of the Senate, together with each NY senators, voted in opposition to blocking choose weapon gross sales to the Israeli navy, which they are saying has contributed to catastrophic demise toll. Protesters rage that hunger has reached a tipping level in Gaza.

“Jewish teachings compel us to take action to save lives. That is why we support blocking the sales of deadly U.S. weapons to the Israeli military, which is one of the few tools available to members of Congress that could actually, and immediately, save lives,” Rabbi Abby Stein of the Jewish Voice for Peace Rabbinic Council stated.

The disruption went on for about an hour till NYPD officers arrived and commenced cuffing protesters and clearing the foyer. Utilizing zip-ties, cops arrested two at a time. So many had been taken into custody that cops used a bus so as to take away the plenty.

New York News reached out to Senator Schumer and Gillibrand’s places of work and are awaiting a response.
