Meet the cop who captured one in all New York’s most infamous jail escapees

Ten years after an Upstate New York jail break captivated the world, the cop who captured fugitive David Sweat is recounting how he took down one half of the harmful duo who escaped a maximum-security facility and almost made it to Canada.

The jail break, which was the topic of a Hollywood movie, unfolded in June 2015 in a distant a part of upstate New York alongside the Canadian border.  

After Sweat and his fellow escapee, Richard Matt, crawled by a jail steam pipe and emerged by a civilian manhole in Dannemora, New York, they survived off the land for 3 weeks as droves of legislation enforcement chased them by the thick woods north of the Adirondack Mountains.

Matt was shot and killed by a U.S. Border Patrol Agent, however Sweat made it to inside a mile and a half of the border when he encountered Jay Prepare dinner, then a New York State Police Sergeant, who noticed the fugitive in an enormous subject of alfalfa in Constable, NY.

In a current interview with WPTZ-TV, Prepare dinner mentioned he made the snap resolution to open fireplace on Sweat after realizing it could be way more harmful to let the convicted assassin get away.

“I kept thinking about, if he’d gotten away from me, how would I have felt?” mentioned Prepare dinner, who now serves because the Franklin County Sheriff. “I didn’t want to shoot anybody. That’s the first time in my whole career that I had to. But I was not going to let him escape me. And I was going to use any means necessary, and I gave him numerous chances to stop.”

When Sweat didn’t cease, Prepare dinner pulled his pistol set off, hitting the fugitive in his shoulders.

At that time, Prepare dinner mentioned he started to carry Sweat at gunpoint, and that’s when the escapee uttered some memorable phrases.

“He yelled out he thought he was going to die and then he yelled out that he just wanted to be free.  And he just wanted to disappear.”

Sweat was sentenced to as much as 7 years in jail for the 2015 escape.  He’s serving these years concurrently together with his authentic life sentence for homicide.

In the meantime, Richard Matt’s daughter, Jamie Smith, has written a guide about her father’s jail escape and the way she got here to phrases together with her identification because the daughter of one in all New York’s most notorious legal fugitives.  Earlier than he escaped, Matt was additionally serving a life sentence for homicide.

“It felt strange to honor my own father because he was the bad guy,” Smith instructed WPTZ. “He just cost the state of New York millions and millions of dollars, and the overtime and all this stuff.  So it was hard to grieve the bad guy.”

Joyce Smith, the jail staffer who equipped Matt and Sweat with the instruments to hack their means out of the Clinton Correctional Facility, pleaded responsible to smuggling contraband.  She was sentenced to as much as 7 years behind bars and was paroled in 2020.
