The Trump administration stated Wednesday that it has notified the accreditor for Columbia College that the varsity violated Title VI, threatening the college’s accreditation standing by saying it “no longer appears to meet the Commissions accreditation standards.”

The U.S. Division of Training’s Workplace for Civil Rights (OCR) and the Division of Well being and Human Providers’ Workplace for Civil Rights (HHS OCR) “determined that Columbia University acted with deliberate indifference towards the harassment of Jewish students, thereby violating Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964,” in line with press launch from the Training Division.

The discharge says the varsity has been in violation for the reason that struggle within the Center East started on Oct. 7, 2023, when Hamas invaded Israel, killing greater than 1,200 folks and taking tons of extra hostage. Israel’s ensuing retaliation on the Gaza Strip has claimed greater than 54,000 lives.

The federal government launch Wednesday states that the varsity is now in violation of the requirements set by Center States Fee on Larger Training, Columbia’s accreditor, which states that “a candidate or accredited institution possesses or demonstrates … compliance with all applicable government laws and regulations.”

“In light of OCR’s determination, Columbia University no longer appears to meet the Commission’s accreditation standards,” the Division of Training stated.

Training Secretary Linda McMahon stated within the launch that Columbia has “acted with deliberate indifference towards the harassment of Jewish students on its campus” since Oct. 7, 2023, calling the varsity’s actions “immoral” and “unlawful.”

McMahon stated the division will work with the accreditor “to ensure Columbia’s compliance with accreditation standards including compliance with federal civil rights laws.”
