Once we got here into workplace in 2022, unlawful smoke retailers had been popping up throughout town. It doesn’t matter what neighborhood you talked to, it doesn’t matter what borough you visited, New Yorkers had been fed up. Unlawful smoke and hashish retailers had been chopping the road — hurting hard-earned authorized hashish companies, promoting merchandise that concentrate on our most weak populations like kids, and contributing to the sensation that something goes on our streets.

Our administration knew it needed to cease. We went to Albany to advocate to get the facility to close these unlawful companies down. And in Could 2024, we launched “Operation Padlock to Protect” to weed out the dangerous actors after being on condition that authority.

One 12 months later, we now have turned the tide. Due to our efforts, we now have closed almost 1,400 unlawful hashish retailers and eliminated $95 million in unlawful merchandise from our streets. However “Operation Padlock to Protect” isn’t solely about defending our children from dangerous merchandise and preserving our communities protected. It’s about ensuring that unlawful smoke retailers don’t take away invaluable storefront area from authorized companies making an attempt to do it the fitting approach.

We’re starting to unseal these padlocked storefronts in order that they’ll re-open as authorized companies like pizzerias, barber retailers, retail shops, and extra. I lately visited considered one of these shops — Salsa Pizza Napoletana — in Brooklyn. The proprietor, Mike Bancale, informed me, “Everything started probably 16 years ago in Italy where me and my best friend, Antonella, met, then decided to move to the States with almost nothing. Salsa [Pizza Napoletana] is the actual dream that came true.”

This small enterprise embodies the spirit of New York Metropolis. It’s a vibrant multi-cultural enterprise, with companions from Italy and Latin America. It creates nice jobs for the neighborhood and serves nice meals.

However we’re not solely shutting down unlawful smoke retailers; we’re serving to help our metropolis’s authorized hashish business as nicely. The authorized hashish business is a budding financial alternative for New York Metropolis, particularly for these disproportionately impacted by the ‘War on Drugs.’ Our administration helps these authorized entrepreneurs via our Hashish NYC Mortgage Fund, which has disbursed over $500,000 to help early-stage hashish companies since October 2024. Quickly, we could have distributed $2 million in complete. With authorized hashish gross sales final 12 months topping $350 million and over 160 authorized dispensaries at the moment open throughout the 5 boroughs, our metropolis’s authorized hashish business is off to a promising begin.

Every single day, our administration works arduous to make New York Metropolis safer, extra inexpensive, and the perfect place to lift a household. This consists of closing unlawful smoke retailers, driving down crime for 5 quarters in a row, making a file variety of small companies, and bettering New Yorkers’ high quality of life.

As we strategy the one-year mark of “Operation Padlock to Protect” and unseal shops throughout town, we are going to proceed to implement the regulation and ensure that these storefronts re-open as protected, authorized companies of all types for households to buy at and luxuriate in.
