Dr. Hazel Nell Dukes, a outstanding civil rights activist and longtime president of the NAACP New York State Convention, has died on the age of 92.

Her son launched an announcement Saturday morning confirming the passing of the activist, who spent a long time of her work in and round New York.

“Mom departed this life peacefully on the morning of March 1, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. Mom was a committed civil rights leader in New York City and the nation and worked tirelessly on the frontlines almost to the end,” Ronald Dukes stated in an announcement on behalf of the household.

Rev. Al Sharpton described Dukes as a “force of nature for justice” and an “activist of the highest order.”

“We will never have another Hazel Dukes, but I am grateful that we had this one,” Sharpton stated of Dukes, whom he knew for greater than 40 years.

“A great pioneer and warrior for social and racial justice, Hazel Dukes was my champion for as long as I can remember and close to all of us in the Cuomo family,” Cuomo stated.

On Lengthy Island, Nassau County Government Bruce Blakeman stated flags had been be lowered to half employees till Dukes’ burial “as a memorial to a great leader.”
