Higher East Facet Meeting Member Rebecca Seawright now chairs the Ageing Committee, positioning her as a key advocate for New York’s almost 5 million older adults.

Meeting Speaker Carl Heastie appointed Seawright final month as the top of the committee that oversees laws impacting the standard of life and independence of seniors whereas additionally managing budgetary oversight of the New York State Workplace for the Ageing (NYSOFA) and its packages.

Seawright, who represents the Higher East Facet, Yorkville, and Roosevelt Island, is the primary girl to carry her district’s seat and succeeds Queens Meeting Member Ron Kim within the submit. 

 “Assembly Member Seawright is an exemplary leader and legislator with a passion for constituent services,” mentioned Heastie. “I am proud to appoint her as chair of this important committee. With her wealth of experience and wisdom, New York’s older adults will have a formidable and tireless advocate.”

Expressing her gratitude, Seawright emphasised her dedication to the state’s growing older inhabitants.

“New York has the fourth-largest population nationally of individuals over 60; these older New Yorkers enrich their communities culturally, economically, and socially,” she mentioned. 

Seawright beforehand served as chair of the Folks with Disabilities Committee, Chair of the Majority Steering Committee, Secretary of the Majority Convention, and chair of the Process Power on Ladies’s Points. She can also be a director of the Legislative Ladies’s Caucus and a member of a number of bipartisan caucuses centered on pro-choice points, environmental insurance policies, and gun reform.

The lawmaker, first elected to the state Meeting in 2014, additionally serves on the Methods and Means, Banking, Codes, Increased Training, and Judiciary Committees.
