The New York Metropolis Fireplace Division is urging New Yorkers to “never block fire hydrants” after firefighters responding to a lethal 3-alarm hearth within the Bronx encountered a car parked in entrance of the closest hearth hydrant.

“We did unfortunately have a car parked on the closest fire hydrant. We’ve seen that now a couple of times in the last week throughout the City,” the FDNY mentioned in a publish on X.

“At 6:00 this morning the Fireplace Division was alerted to a report of a hearth at 2086 Anthony Avenue. Wednesday’s incident is the second in 4 days during which the firefighting efforts had been affected by vehicles blocking hydrants.

On Sunday, firefighters responding to a lethal home hearth in Brooklyn had been slowed down due to two vehicles blocking the 2 closest hearth hydrants.

“Cars parked on hydrants are part of the reason we have the outcome that we have here today. The entire fire department is begging New Yorkers ‘do not leave your cars on fire hydrants,'” NYC Fireplace Commissioner Robert Tucker mentioned after the incident.

What are the rules on parking shut to fireplace hydrants?

In New York Metropolis, it is unlawful to park inside 15 ft of both aspect of a hearth hydrant, the NYC Division of Transportation says on its web site. The rule is in impact 24/7, with no exceptions.

The rule additionally establishes that between dawn and sundown, a “passenger vehicle may stand alongside a fire hydrant” so long as the driving force stays contained in the car and is ready to transfer the car if required to take action.

Violators are topic to a $115 effective.
